Sam Bankman-Fried Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison, Will Forfeit Over $11B

Once the king of cryptoSam Bankman-Fried will now spend more than two decades behind bars. The FTX founder was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison for massive fraud on hundreds of thousands of customers that resulted in the downfall of the cryptocurrency exchange company. According to Bloomberg, Bankman-Fried must also forfeit more than $11 billion. Although he spoke for 20 minutes expressing regret for his previous actions, US District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan rejected Bankman-Fried‘s remarks and instead focused on the severity of his offenses.

 

Google Launches Generative AI Accelerator Program for 21 Nonprofits

Google’s charitable arm, Google.org, announced a $20 million program Thursday to help back 21 nonprofits developing tech that leverages generative AI. In a blog postGoogle says that during the six-week program, organizations will be provided with technical training, workshops, mentors, and guidance from an AI coach. Additionally, Google employees will work with three nonprofits via its Google.org fellowship program. “Generative AI can help social impact teams be more productive, creative, and effective in serving their communities,” Annie Lewin, Director of Global Advocacy at Google.org, said. “Google.org funding recipients report that AI helps them achieve their goals in one-third of the time at nearly half the cost.”

Former Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele Joins Valentino

Alessandro Michele is taking his talents to Valentino. Gucci’s former Creative Director, who left the fashion house in November 2022, will step into the role when it is vacated by Pierpaolo Piccioli on April 2. In a Thursday post on Instagram, the Italian-born designer gleefully announced the news, writing, “I feel immense joy and enormous responsibility in entering a Maison de Couture that has engraved the word ‘beauty’ in a collective story made of research and extreme grace.” During his seven years with Gucci, Michele helped boost profits from €3.5 billion ($3.8 billion) in 2014 to €9.73 billion ($10.5 billion) in 2022.

‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Season 3 Premiere Pushed Back

Fans of the hit show Welcome to Wrexham will have to wait a little longer for the premiere of Season 3. According to Deadline, the Emmy-winning program now kicks off on May 2, two weeks after the originally scheduled premiere. FX gave no explanation for the decision, but the third season is expected to be its most candid one yet. For the first time, viewers will have access to dramatics inside the locker room and alongside the players. This season will also chronicle the ascent of Wrexham AFC‘s women’s team, fresh off an undefeated season that ended with them being promoted to the Welsh Adran Premier League. Despite award-winning success, Wrexham has hit a bit of a financial snag. The club disclosed Thursday that its co-owners, actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are owed $11.4 million, up from $4.67 million from the previous year, ending June 2022.

Christopher Nolan & Emma Thomas to Receive Knighthood, Damehood

Christopher Nolan is adding another prestigious honor to an already victorious 2024. The Associated Press revealed Thursday that Nolan and his wife, film producer Emma Thomas, are set to receive a knighthood and damehood, respectively. Earlier this month, Nolan took home his first-ever Best Director Oscar for Oppenheimer, his biographical thriller about the father of the atomic bomb. The film won the most trophies at the 96th Academy Awards with seven, including Best Actor (Cillian Murphy) and Best Picture. The dynamic duo runs a production company, Syncopy, which has been behind many of their blockbuster projects like the Batman trilogy, Inception, and The Prestige.

Sega Sells Relic Entertainment, Lays off 240 People Across Europe

In an email to staffers Thursday morning, Sega Europe boss Jurgen Post confirmed that about 240 roles will be cut across Sega Europe and UK-based divisions, which include Creative Assembly and Sega Hardlight. According to Variety, Sega is also selling Company of Heroes and Dawn of Wars developer Relic Entertainment. Relic responded to the news, saying, “To our fans, we want to assure you we will continue to support our titles, including Company of Heroes 3 – we are looking forward to the 1.6 Update in April, loaded with new content and features requested by our community.”
