Tech is booming in The Bay, but don’t sleep on basketball. According to a report from Sportico, the Golden State Warriors are the most valuable team in the entire NBA as 2024 comes to a close. The Joe Lacob-led franchise is currently valued at a league-high $9.1 billion, up 10% from 2023. Around the Association, the New York Knicks take the No. 2 spot at $8.3 billion, with the Los Angeles Lakers following them at just over $8 billion. Notably, the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers round out the top five, each seeing the most significant jump in value, up 43% and 25%, respectively, benefiting from modern arenas and major markets.
Fed Cuts Rates for Third and Final Time This Year
The Federal Reserve continued its streak of cutting rates on Wednesday, lowering interest rates by a quarter percentage point for the third and final time this year. The Federal Open Market Committee dropped the overnight borrowing rate closer to the December 2022 range of 4.25% to 4.5%. Indications suggest the rate will only drop twice in 2025.
Netflix Reveals Upcoming SEC, Rafael Nadal Docuseries Projects
The only Power Four conference with its own chant will soon have its own Netflix series. Starting in the summer of 2025, a docuseries following the biggest teams and names in the SEC will debut on the streaming giant. Per The Hollywood Reporter, footage is currently being filmed across programs throughout the 2024 campaign in a style similar to other popular Netflix-produced sports series. Netflix also shared Wednesday that they are developing a docuseries on recently retired tennis icon Rafael Nadal. Per the announcement, the program will “spotlight Nadal’s sterling career, as well as his life off-the-court, showcasing never-before-seen material from Nadal’s personal archive and featuring landmark access with the tennis star, his family, and his close circle of coaches and advisors.”
New Formula 1 Series is Coming to Amazon’s Prime Video
After the reality TV success of Drive to Survive, Formula 1 is taking it one step further on the silver screen by sanctioning its first-ever scripted series. Amazon MGM Studios‘ One is currently in development, according to the Variety exclusive, with the program scheduled to drop via Prime Video. Felicity Jones of The Brutalist fame will both star and executive produce this upcoming drama series focused on a family-owned racing team facing financial difficulties.
EA Sports’ ‘College Football 25’ is Highest-Selling Sports Video Game Ever
EA Sports’ first college football video game in 11 years has proven to be a massive success, with data revealing that not only is College Football 25 the best-selling game of 2024, but it is now officially the highest-selling sports video game ever in the United States (based on dollar sales). Keep in mind that the game dropped on July 19, reaching the milestone in just five months. Hopefully, these results prove the franchise is here to stay.
Potential TikTok Ban is Headed to the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court confirmed on Wednesday that they will hear oral arguments on whether the decision to ban TikTok violates the First Amendment. According to The Wall Street Journal, the expedited hearing is scheduled for Jan. 10, as the social media app is currently scheduled to go dark in the US on Jan. 19. Called the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, the law would require TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform to an American company or face an injunction.
Nike, Rutgers Ink Multi-Year Deal
Rutgers announced that it has entered a multi-year deal with Nike and BSN SPORTS, making the former its official outfitter for the program beginning in July 2025. Calling The Swoosh an “iconic brand, synonymous with innovation, success and a championship mentality,” Rutgers interim athletic director Ryan Pisarri added that BSN SPORTS “have distinguished themselves as a premier service provider for universities and colleges across the country.” The school previously had an agreement with Adidas after initially signing a deal with the company in 2017. Fans can begin purchasing Nike-branded Scarlet Knights gear beginning next summer.
OpenAI Launches Phone and Text Service for ChatGPT
OpenAI is making it easier than ever to connect with its artificial intelligence platform, ChatGPT. On Wednesday, the company shared that by calling 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) stateside or messaging via WhatsApp, you can chat for 15 minutes per month complimentary, but WhatsApp messages have a daily limit. OpenAI added they may adjust usage limits based on capacity if necessary.
