The Rock’s ‘Red One’ Sets New Record for Amazon
Christmas came early for Amazon, which saw its biggest opening on Prime Video from its Amazon MGM studio with Red One. Per the company, over 50 million people watched the holiday action comedy starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Chris Evans over the first four days of its release. The previous record belonged to Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House, which took two weeks to hit the 50 million viewership mark. Red One was also released in theaters, bringing in over $175 million worldwide thus far.
SZA Taps Ben Stiller to Help Reveal Album Release Date
In an unlikely pairing, SZA enlisted actor Ben Stiller‘s help to announce Dec. 20 as the release date for her upcoming Lana, the deluxe version of her chart-topping SOS. In the teaser video, Stiller can be seen jamming out to SZA in a car, going word for word with the superstar singer on her single, “Drive.” This isn’t the first time Stiller has used his lip-syncing skills to help an artist out with visuals, having appeared in Jack Johnson’s music video for his hit, “Taylor,” in 2003. It’s been over two years since SZA dropped SOS, which went on to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums list.
Disney Tops All TV Streamers in November
Disney continues to dominate the streaming game in 2024, according to Nielsen‘s monthly media distributor rankings, claiming the largest share of TV usage for November at 11.1%. Of that total, 43% of it comes from Hulu and Disney+. YouTube finished second for the month with a high of 10.8% and Paramount recorded its highest TV usage (9.3%) in nine months to rank third. NBCUniversal and Fox round out the top five, while Hallmark made an appearance down the list for the first time since December of last year, thanks to its annual holiday slate.
Liverpool Documentary Coming to A24
Liverpool FC, one of the most successful football clubs in the UK, is teaming up with A24 to produce a documentary that centers around legendary manager Bill Shankly. The film will explore the team’s rise in the 1960s under Shankly’s leadership to a global powerhouse, now boasting 400 million followers worldwide and 69 major trophies to its name. The driving force behind making You’ll Never Walk Alone the Liverpool anthem, Shankly retired from his post in 1974, passing away seven years later at 68.
Vera Wang Finds New Suitor in Bonobos Owner
After 35 years of running her brand, Vera Wang is selling her company of the same name to WHP Global. However, she will remain on in her role as Founder and Chief Creative Officer, while also joining as a WHP shareholder. According to the release, Vera Wang brings in over $700 million annually. With the new deal, WHP adds to its expanding portfolio that already includes Rag & Bone, Bonobos, Express, and more.
Temu Repeats as Most Downloaded App in 2024
For the second consecutive year, Temu held on to its spot as the most downloaded iPhone app in 2024, Apple recently revealed. Finishing in second was Meta-owned Threads, while TikTok — the top downloaded app in 2022 and currently battling a potential ban in court — rounds out the top three. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which now boasts over 300 million weekly users, comes in fourth, with Google unsurprisingly also cracking the top five.
Netflix Developing Mike Tyson Documentary Series
On the heels of his live fight against Jake Paul on Netflix, the streaming giant and Mike Tyson are teaming up to produce a docuseries, they announced on Tuesday. In a three-part series, Netflix will dive into the career of the “baddest man on the planet,” taking a “look back at all of them for insights into one of the most compelling and polarizing figures of our time.” Tyson’s accomplishments in the ring speak for themselves, having been the youngest heavyweight champion of all time at the age of 20. He held the title from 1987 to 1990.
Cameron Brink Set to Join Unrivaled, Will Play in 2026
Despite still recovering from a torn ACL during her rookie season in the WNBA, Cameron Brink has decided to join Unrivaled, signing a multi-year deal for the inaugural season set to tip off next month. However, Brink won’t play until 2026, the league said, as her focus will remain on rehab when she joins the Lunar Owls for preseason training. Following an illustrious career at Stanford, Brink was selected second overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft. She appeared in 15 games before suffering her injury, averaging 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds.
