Lady Gaga Kicks Off Olympics With Opening Ceremony Performance
After much anticipation, the Paris Olympics officially kicked off Friday with the opening ceremony. As athletes made their way down the River Seine, spectators were surprised with a performance from none other than Lady Gaga. Appearing in a black dress on a gold staircase surrounded by dancers, Gaga sang “Mon Truc en Plume” (“My Thing With Feathers”), a French song by renowned artist and dancer, the late Zizi Jeanmaire. This won’t be the last you see and hear from Lady Gaga in 2024, as the Academy Award winner is set to star as Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role in Joker: Folie à Deux. She also recently confirmed she’s begun work on a seventh studio album.
USWNT Star Sophia Smith, Gatorade Team Up
Ahead of Team USA forward Sophia Smith‘s Olympics debut, Gatorade confirmed she is joining their roster that also includes fellow US Soccer stars Mallory Swanson and Christian Pulisic. In a statement, Smith said being a part of Team Gatorade is a “full-circle moment” for her. Gatorade Head of Sports Marketing Jeff Kearney said that Smith “is the exact type of athlete we look to bring into the Gatorade Family – a standout with a passion for growing the game and the ambition to be the best in her sport.” Earlier this year, Smith agreed to an extension with the Portland Thorns that officially makes her the highest-paid player in the NWSL.

Team USA Spends $230M in Gold Pursuit
While the United States is expected to win gold in certain Olympic events, others aren’t as certain. In an effort to improve in those areas, Team USA has used a high-performance grant system to spend roughly $230 million on various sports in which the country hasn’t been successful in years past, such as sailing and weightlifting. The investment appears to be paying off, as Team USA has topped the medal count table for the last seven Summer Olympics.
