The FIFA Council approved plans on Friday to increase the Women’s World Cup from 32 to 48 nations. The new format will take effect in time for the 2031 tournament, which the United States is expected to host. The 2027 competition, being played in Brazil, will still have 32 teams. This also brings the event in line with the men’s, which will have 48 teams competing for the first time in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Organizers for the Cannes Film Festival announced that legendary actor Robert De Niro will receive an honorary Palme d’Or award during the opening ceremony on May 13. Crediting his decades-long reign in film, the two-time Oscar winner presided over the jury in 2011 and most recently in 2023, he and Martin Scorsese returned to premiere Killers of the Flower Moon.

YouTube is reportedly the favorite to stream the NFL‘s São Paulo, Brazil game at Corinthians Arena, joining broadcast giants Netflix and Amazon to stream exclusive contests. The Los Angeles Chargers are already slated to be one of the teams playing. Unlike its subscription counterparts, YouTube is expected to not only make the game free to watch in the United States, but also for football fans around the world. 

After announcing their partnership in March, the NWSL and Alex Cooper’s Unwell brand have confirmed the first “Unwell FC” event for May 17 during the Bay FC and Angel City FC showdown in San Jose. Ticketed fans will be granted access to a “premium experience featuring exclusive Unwell FC merch, interactive on-site activations, complimentary Unwell Hydration, and prime game viewing access,” while Cooper herself will be in attendance.

Sony Pictures film chairman and CEO Tom Rothman has agreed to a multi-year extension with the entertainment giant. The longest-serving film head in Hollywood is credited with overseeing the release of blockbuster hits like the Jumanji franchise, Anyone But You, the Venom series, and The Equalizer trilogy. Rothman also breathed new life into the Spider-Man franchise alongside Marvel, with 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home grossing $1.1 billion at the box office.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Pete & Thomas Foundation will host its first gala this summer in New York City’s Gotham Hall. Scheduled for July 16, the event will be emceed by Taraji P. Henson and feature spins by DJ D-Nice. A special musical guest was teased, but will be announced closer to the event. Guests in attendance will come from the business, sports, philanthropy, and entertainment industries.

In a blog post published Thursday, Bill Gates shared intentions to “give away virtually all” of his wealth within the next 20 years before closing his foundation for good on Dec. 31, 2045. Worth around $168 billion according to Bloomberg, Gates and his foundation will focus on three main goals: ending preventable deaths of mothers and infants, eliminating deadly infectious diseases, and lifting millions of people worldwide out of poverty.

Beauty brands continue to push their way into sports, as Paris Saint-Germain’s women’s team named Ilia Beauty its official hybrid makeup partner until 2026. “We’ve found a partner in Paris Saint-Germain to tell the story of no-compromise performance for women, and I look forward to watching that story unfold this season and next,” said Ilia founder Sasha Plavsic.

After two films and a series, the Ted franchise has expanded to an animated program ordered by Peacock. Creator Seth MacFarlane will once again voice Ted, the troublemaking teddy bear, and also produce all episodes. Also confirmed to return to voice their characters are Mark Wahlberg as John, Amanda Seyfried as Sam, and Jessica Barth as Tami-Lynn. Kyle Mooney of Saturday Night Live fame is joining the cast as Apollo, and Liz Richman will voice Ruth.

A$AP Nast just became the first musician to collaborate with COMME des GARÇONS SHIRT, with the rapper sharing that his debut collection is available to shop at Dover Street Market stores worldwide and on selected DSM sites. The capsule features 12 designs of t-shirts, cardigans, and shirts splashed with Nast’s logo and graphics inspired by his upcoming album 90’s Era Nasty.
