The Senate has passed the Protect College Sports Act in a 77-22 vote, advancing legislation that would give the NCAA an antitrust exemption and establish national rules for athlete compensation, NIL, transfers, and recruitment. The bipartisan bill now heads to the House, where its future remains uncertain. The measure would also protect schools and conferences from certain federal lawsuits and allow voluntary media-rights pooling. More than 40 college sports reform bills have previously failed to reach a floor vote.

AMD is acquiring World Labs, the AI startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an $8.2 billion all-stock deal. The San Francisco-based lab is developing “world models” designed to simulate 3D environments, with potential applications in robotics and other physical AI. Li, a former Stanford professor and Google AI researcher, will become AMD’s chief scientist and executive VP. The deal marks AMD’s second-largest acquisition ever.

The NHL’s business is booming, with the league’s 32 teams now collectively worth $78 billion, up 160% over the past five years. The average franchise is valued at $2.43 billion, a 16% jump from 2025, while teams generated an estimated $8.3 billion in revenue last season. The Toronto Maple Leafs lead at $4.8 billion, followed by the New York Rangers at $4.15 billion. Meanwhile, expansion fees could reach $2.3 billion or more soon.

Netflix has unveiled the trailer for The One About Matthew Perry, a three-part documentary series examining the life and legacy of the late Friends star. Directed by Mary Robertson, the series features intimate interviews with Perry’s sister and close friends, exploring his career, personal struggles, and battle with addiction. Perry died in 2023 at 54. The One About Matthew Perry premieres Oct. 27 on Netflix.

Andrew Schulz is joining Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal’s Miami Vice ’85, directed by Joseph Kosinski. Inspired by the original NBC series’ pilot, the film will explore the glamour and corruption of 1980s Miami, with Whitney Peak, Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, and Danny Ramirez also starring. The IMAX feature is slated to begin production this year ahead of its May 19, 2028, theatrical release.

Drake is bringing a selection of unreleased songs from his FOMO short film to streaming services on Thursday. The rapper confirmed during a livestream that “enough” of the tracks fans have been asking about will arrive this week. The film, released on Sept. 15, featured roughly 10 previously unheard songs, including collaborations with Don Toliver, Yeat, and PARTYNEXTDOOR. It remains unclear which tracks will make the cut.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is already set for a theatrical re-release with additional footage before it even initially leaves theaters, per Deadline. The new material is expected to include Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple, whose scene was cut from the original film, along with other surprises. The Tom Holland-led blockbuster is still running at the box office and has already grossed $2.495 billion worldwide, including $950.7 million domestically. Sony has not yet announced the re-release date.

Margot Robbie and Jason Blum, both three-time Oscar nominees, have joined Cinema United’s Filmmaker Leadership Council, a group focused on supporting the future of theatrical moviegoing. Robbie and Blum join council leaders Jerry Bruckheimer and Emma Thomas, along with Ryan Coogler, Brad Bird, Jason Reitman, and Celine Song. The group advises on issues including theatrical windows, marketing, industry consolidation, and technology.

OpenAI has scrapped plans to release GPT-6.1 Astra after internal testing found the model fell short of the company’s safety standards. OpenAI’s Head of Safety Systems said Astra struggled to stay within its authorized scope and to accurately communicate its actions to users. The decision comes amid increased scrutiny of AI agents following several recent security incidents involving OpenAI models. It also arrives as OpenAI and Anthropic leadership have called for greater caution around the pace of AI development.

Game of Thrones is finally heading to theaters. Warner Bros. has set Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest for June 1, 2029, marking the franchise’s first feature film. Directed by Owen Harris and written by Beau Willimon, the movie will chronicle Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. The project was first discussed more than a decade ago, while HBO continues expanding the franchise with House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen are returning to television together in Happy Jack, a new comedy series set to premiere on AMC and AMC+ in 2027. The duo will play father and son, with Charlie starring as Jack, a struggling dad whose own father, played by Martin, helped raise his two daughters. Created by Two and a Half Men veterans Jim Patterson and Matt Ross, the series will begin filming in early 2027 and marks AMC’s first multi-camera comedy.

The PGA Tour has hired Ryan Holcomb as Senior VP and Head of Original Content, expanding its push beyond live competition. Holcomb joins from Box to Box Films, the studio behind Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Faceoff: Inside the NHL. He’ll help shape the Tour’s content strategy through PGA Tour Studios, which has produced projects including Full Swing and Chasing Sunday. Holcomb reports to PGA Tour Studios GM Luis Goicouria.
