Green joins Network with Rich Kleiman to discuss the Warriors’ season outlook, his bond with Curry and Thompson, Steve Kerr’s growth, Bob Myers’ exit, and more.
Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green wears many hats. Professional basketball player, enforcer, businessman, father, and so much more. After playing in his 14th NBA Opening Night game on Tuesday in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers, he’s become nearly synonymous with the Warriors and the success they’ve experienced over the last decade-plus.
Green heads into this campaign at the ripe age of 35, with a birthday coming in March, while his teammates Stephen Curry (37), Jimmy Butler (36), and even new additions like Al Horford (39) help make this one of the more veteran-laden teams. And with the youth movement threatening to take over the league seemingly every year, Green wants to remind everyone who the Warriors really are.
“What last year showed me was A.) We’re still right there. We’re still a very tough team to beat, we can still beat anyone,” Green said on the latest episode of Network with Rich Kleiman.. “And now you add in the pieces that we brought in. Al [Horford] brings another big who can go toe to toe and guard some of these bigs. That veteran presence that we need.”
In this unfiltered conversation with Kleiman, Green reflects on his bond with Stephen Curry, Steve Kerr’s evolution as a head coach, and the impact of Bob Myers’ departure. Additionally, Green reveals the story of how Klay Thompson broke the news to say he was leaving for the Dallas Mavericks and why he still believes the 2016–17 Warriors are the greatest team in NBA history.
“When you have someone in your corner, it’s hard to see them go,” Green said of Myers. “A lot like Klay, he no longer really felt like Bob. He couldn’t do the job to the best of his ability anymore. As a friend, you’re rooting for him to go do the next thing because I know how great he is.”
