Inside the Tyreek Hill Trade & His Record-setting Dolphins Contract

Last Updated: September 29, 2022
Patrick Mahomes’ favorite wideout is a Chief no more. After being traded to Miami, let’s dive into the details of the KC-Dolphins Tyreek Hill trade.

Davante Adams didn’t just get traded from the Packers to the Raiders last week — he earned a gigantic contract extension that reset the market for wide receivers. And this week, the Miami Dolphins and Tyreek Hill reset it all over again.

In an eye-popping trade that once again shakes up the NFL’s balance of power, the Kansas City Chiefs traded the Cheetah to the Dolphins for a package of picks headlined by a 2022 first-rounder. Immediately after, they locked Hill into a four-year contract extension worth $120 million, setting new records for average annual contract value and guaranteed money.

Trade season and free agency have been an absolute whirlwind. Let’s catch our breaths for a moment and get into the details of this historic Tyreek Hill trade and the contract extension that followed.

Chiefs-Dolphins Tyreek Hill Trade Breakdown

Miami Dolphins get:

  • WR Tyreek Hill

Kansas City Chiefs get:

  • 2022 first-round pick (No. 29)
  • 2022 second-round pick (No. 50)
  • 2022 fourth-round pick
  • 2023 fourth-round pick
  • 2023 sixth-round pick

Note that in exchange for Adams, the Packers received just two picks: a 2022 first-rounder (No. 22 overall) and a 2022 second-rounder (No. 53 overall).

Tyreek Hill Contract Details & Salary

Dollar figures as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter via agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Years: 4
Total value: $120,000,000 (No. 2 all-time among WRs)
Average annual value: $30,000,000 (No. 1 all-time among WRs)
Fully guaranteed at signing: $52,535,000(No. 1 all-time among WRs)
Total guaranteed money: $72,200,000 (No. 1 all-time among WRs)
Free agency: 2026

There you have it. Maximalists like Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, will consider this a four-year, $120 million pact, making Hill the highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history both by average annual contract value (Adams got $28 million) total guaranteed money (Adams got $67.5 million), and money fully guaranteed at signing (DeAndre Hopkins is No. 2 at $42.75 million).

Some of this comes down to interpretation, however.

As Tom Pelissero notes, some of the money in that $120 million figure was already in place as part of his previous deal, which was due to expire next year. Effectively speaking, we’re looking at three new years and $75 million in new money:
