Lionel Messi Crowned Time Athlete of the Year

Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has been named Time Magazine’s Athlete of the Year for 2023 after his move stateside to join the MLS this summer reinvigorated the league’s popularity. This marks another significant end-of-year award for the undisputed GOAT, who also took home his eighth Ballon d’Or in October. Messi joins the likes of Michael Phelps, LeBron James, Simone Biles, and the United States Women’s National Team to win the coveted award. New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge was Time’s Athlete of the Year in 2022.

Beyoncé Files for New Trademarks

BGK Trademark Holdings LLC, Beyoncé‘s holding company, recently filed for two new trademarks — ST. ORION CLOTHING and OPALE. According to trademark attorney Josh Gerben, both will cover a variety of consumer goods like jewelry, bags, clothing, toys, and more. In March, Beyoncé and Adidas mutually decided to end their partnership for her brand Ivy Park. This agreement was reached after the two parties had creative differences in the direction of the line, a source told The Hollywood Reporter. Could this be another avenue in which the current queen of the box office is expanding her billion-dollar empire?

Elena Delle Donne & Dennis Rodman Launch Their Own Wine Brands

Hoopers past and present are taking their talents to the wine game, as Elena Delle Donne and Dennis Rodman are both launching their own respective brands. With the creation of Deldon WinesDelle Donne became the first WNBA player with a namesake wine. All proceeds will be split between the Mystics star’s non-profit and the DD Entrepreneurial Foundation. For Rodman, his limited-edition brand — The Rebel — is akin to his playing style. “The Rebel represents a break from the ordinary, offering a unique experience with each bottle,” it says on the wine’s site.

Kevin Hart to Host ManningCast-style Show for NBA In-Season Tournament

Capitalizing on the success of Eli and Peyton‘s ManningCast-style alternate broadcast, Kevin Hart is hosting a spin-off of the show for the NBA‘s new In-Season Tournament. NBA Unplugged with Kevin Hartwhich comes from Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and Hart’s own Hartbeat — will air on ESPN2 on Dec. 9. Joining Hart are the Plastic Cup Boyz: Joey Wells, Will Horton, and Na’im Lynn, but viewers can expect special guest appearances from athletes and celebrities throughout.

2024 Sports Power Brunch to Return Ahead of Super Bowl

The Sports Power Brunch is returning for a fifth year next February, and the honorees once again reflect the best women in sports across multiple leagues. Some of the honorees that will be presented awards are USTA Chief Executive and US Open Tournament Director Stacey Allaster (Trailblazer Award), Las Vegas Raiders President Sandra Douglass Morgan (Leadership Award), Kltuch Sports Group President of Football Nicole Lynn (Dealmaker Award), and Las Vegas Aces President Nikki Fargas (Impact Award). The 2024 Sports Power Brunch will take place on Feb. 7 at ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas ahead of Super Bowl LVIII.

HarbourView Equity Partners Raises Borrowing Capacity for More Acquisitions

HarborView Equity Partners announced revisions to its senior secured credit facility on Tuesday to increase its borrowing capacity from $200 million to $300 million. Per Billboard, the additional $100 million of capital will go toward acquiring more music royalty catalogs and general corporate plans. Founded by Sherrese Clarke Soares in 2021, HarborView Equity is a rising competitor in music acquisitions that has built a hip-hop and R&B-heavy song catalog. HarbourView is behind some recent acquisitions, such as the royalty income of select Nelly recordings, select recorded music and publishing properties of rapper Wiz Khalifa, and select publishing assets of country singer Kane Brown.
