The IP era of film has hit a new height. One weekend in, A Minecraft Movie has made a record $163 million domestically and $313 million globally, coming in as the biggest box office debut of 2025 thus far. The historic mark is a new domestic record start for video game adaptations, topping The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.4 million). The Jack Black-led film also bested Barbie‘s $162 million opening weekend haul to become the biggest Warner Bros. stateside debut since Batman vs. Superman in 2016.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has another accolade to his name: Barbie Signature Kenbassador. The man of many partnerships sees his likeness transferred to a toy on a commemorative collaboration with Mattel, showcasing the hoop hero in lifestyle fashion complete with Beats headphones, Nike Terminator sneakers, and an I Promise wristband. The collectible, which will donate proceeds to the LeBron James Family Foundation, is slated to launch on April 23 for $75.

Women’s basketball disruptor Unrivaled is off to a hot start. Reported by Front Office Sports, the professional women-led 3v3 league made over $27 million in its opening season, nearly breaking even according to the commissioner Micky Lawler. Unrivaled‘s second season is said to expand seating and also offer away games outside of its Miami home base.

Las Vegas Aces MVP forward A’ja Wilson has a new running mate: Chase Bank. This weekend at the Final Four, the former NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player announced a new deal with the finance institution, aimed at breaking boundaries for women in the world of sports and business.

After back-to-back weeks atop the Billboard 200, Playboi Carti’s MUSIC has been replaced by a not-so-new No. 1. The deluxe edition of Ariana Grande’s eternal sunshine, released initially in March 2024, has returned to the top spot thanks to its extended play re-release. While Carti claims the No. 2 spot, Lil Durk debuts at No. 3 with the release of Deep Thoughts, followed by Kendrick Lamar and Drake & PARTYNEXTDOOR rounding out the top five.

The opening ceremony of the 78th Cannes Film Festival will celebrate an old friend this May. Robert De Niro, a favorite of the French film festival since showing Taxi Driver in 1976, will receive an honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement. Previous recipients include Meryl Streep, George Lucas, and Harrison Ford.

British automobile maker Jaguar Land Rover is suspending shipments to the United States for the month of April. The news comes as a reaction to President Trump’s tariff policy that places a 25% tariff on all foreign cars imported to the States. While the US remains an important market for the luxury auto manufacturer, all stateside shipments will remain paused as Jaguar Land Rover assesses the economics of the executive order.

The Tribeca Festival will honor a local legend this summer. The New York film fair will open its doors over the Beacon Theatre this June to show Billy Joel: So It Goes, a two-part documentary on the Bronx native that dives deep into his life and career. Fans outside of the Big Apple can expect the doc to debut after the Tribeca opening this summer on Max.

UConn cut down the nets in Tampa to become the 2025 national champions, but that doesn’t mean Las Vegas isn’t already taking bets on next year. On the first official day of the college basketball offseason for female competitors, the two teams that duked it out for this year’s title — the Huskies and South Carolina — are co-favorites to win it all in 2026 at +390 on FanDuel Sportsbook. UCLA and Texas are tied for the second-best odds at +600, while LSU, USC, and Notre Dame aren’t far behind at +900. 

Ted Christie, CEO of Spirit Airlines, is stepping down from his position. The news comes on the heels of the Florida-based economy carrier filing for bankruptcy in November 2024. Christie has led the company since becoming CEO in 2019, with a group of internal executives currently searching for his successor. 

Justin Vernon is back in the booth – and on the court. The Bon Iver frontman is rolling out his new album, SABLE, fABLE, by rolling out the Wilson for a basketball tournament at Live Inside This State Fair in Los Angeles. The April 12 event will serve as a listening party and art marketplace, following the new project’s Friday release.
