Patrick Mahomes: MVP & Mentor

Boardroom caught up with the two-time NFL MVP to talk about building up Team Mahomes with Adidas, the impact of NIL in college sports, going for a three-peat, and more.

Patrick Mahomes‘ transition from a college quarterback at Texas Tech to an NFL superstar is nothing short of exemplary. From the moment he was named the Kansas City Chiefs starting quarterback, his impressive performance on the field quickly captured the attention of millions, resulting in three Super Bowl titles in seven years.

In Week 1 of the NFL season, Mahomes officially became the Chiefs’ all-time leading passer on a 23-yard pass to Travis Kelce, passing the late Len Dawson. The two-time league MVP accomplished that feat in 86 fewer games than Dawson, too.

As he continues to dominate the league, Mahomes has expanded his influence beyond football, marking a significant milestone with the launch of the inaugural Team Mahomes NIL deal in partnership with Adidas. The cohort includes:

  • Five-star freshman WR Micah Hudson
  • USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year NiJaree Canady
  • Jasmine Shavers, the leading scorer for the women’s basketball team
  • Matthew Comegys, one of the nation’s top amateur golfers
  • Women’s soccer player Sam Courtwright, 2023 Big 12 Freshman of the Year
  • Baseball player TJ Pompey, Freshman All-American

By signing six promising athletes from his alma mater to this initiative, Mahomes not only underscores his commitment to nurturing emerging talent but also leverages his own success to create opportunities and shape the future of sports through strategic endorsements and mentorship.

Last month, Mahomes visited Lubbock, Texas, to share the news with the student-athletes. While there, he sat down with Boardroom to discuss the decision behind selecting these specific players, the impact of NIL deals in college sports, another Super Bowl defense season, and more.
