Angela Bassett Makes History with First-ever Marvel Oscar Nomination

The Oscar nominations are here. Leading this year’s star-studded list is Angela Bassett who hopes to repeat her Golden Globe success, becoming the first actor to portray a character in a Marvel film to take home an award.  Rihanna also celebrates her return to music with a nomination for Best Original Song for “Lift Me Up” from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. Film favorite Everything Everywhere All at Once, scooped up a number of noms. The long list includes Best Picture, Best Writing (Original Screenplay), and four acting nods for Stephanie Hsu, Michelle Yeoh, Jaime Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan.

Notorious B.I.G.-Inspired Jordan Collection Heads to Sotheby's

Nike, Inc. announced Monday that it partnered with the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation for an exclusive auction. As part of the partnership, the two sides will auction 23 pairs of exclusive Air Jordan retros commemorating Biggie. “This Air Jordan 13 has been reinterpreted to celebrate the legacy of The Notorious B.I.G., someone who reached for the stars, had the boldest of dreams, with the work ethic to back it up,” explained Reggie Saunders, Vice President of Entertainment Marketing for Jordan Brand. Sotheby’s online auction will run until Feb. 3 with the shoes estimated to sell between $2,300 and $5,200.

Bezos Fires Back, Indicates Washington Post is Not for Sale

Jeff Bezos is pushing back after a report suggested that the billionaire would sell the Washington Post in a move to facilitate his purchase of the Washington Commanders. CNN reported Monday that Bezos told the paper’s senior staff in private meetings that he had no plans to sell the paper after an initial rumor circulated widely. There has been speculation that Bezos is interested in buying the franchise, potentially with Jay-Z. However, Bezos has remained mum on the matter. 

Niantic Expands Partnership with the NBA

Some of the next generation of the NBA are taking their talents to the next level. Niantic, the company behind Pokémon Go!, is expanding its partnership with the NBA to enhance its offerings behind NBA All World. In addition to a new campaign called “go. all. out.” the company is putting together a short-form series featuring Jalen Green, Jordan Poole, KarlAnthony Towns, and Andrew Wiggins

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s 'Air' Gets Release Date as Amazon Studios Returns to Theaters

Amazon Studios is back in the game. After a hiatus dating back to 2019’s Late Night, the production house announced the global release of Air for April 5. The film stars Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. It tells the story of the early days of Michael Jordan’s empire with the Swoosh. The film’s cast includes Viola Davis, Jason Bateman, and Chris Tucker.

Sundance Sales Spike with $20M Netflix Deal for “Fair Play”

The stars are out in Park City. As the Sundance Film Festival settles into its full swing, the deals are beginning to unfold. One of this year’s most highly-anticipated movies, Fair Play, which stars Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich, commanded $20 million from Netflix. The intimates company unveiled its new ads, which star Beatrice Grannò and Simona Tabasco, the breakout stars of season two of the HBO smash White Lotus. The upcoming collection drops on Jan. 26.

Microsoft Makes Multibillion Dollar Bet on ChatGPT

Will ChatGPT have staying power or is it another technology trend that will simply disappear? Microsoft is betting on the latter. The company revealed that it has sparked a multiyear, multibillion-dollar investment into OpenAI, the parent company of the software. The news comes just days before Microsoft’s earnings reports and one week after the company let go of 12,000 employees, which raised some eyebrows about fiscal priorities.
