US House of Representatives Bans TikTok on Government Phones

Time may be running out on TikTok. The US House of Representatives banned the social media app from all government-distributed devices. The announcement is the most recent move in mounting pressure against the Chinese company. The move comes in response to the $1.7 billion omnibus bill, which included a line item for the app’s deletion.

Sam Bankman-Fried Misappropriated $546M of Alameda’s Funds

The Sam Bankman-Fried story continues to unfold. Although the FTX founder was released from jail last week on bond, he faces increased pressure following revelations that he misused private funds for personal gains. In the most recent finding, Bankman-Fried allocated $546 million of Alameda Research‘s money to purchase shares from Robinhood. He is scheduled to enter a plea in New York on Jan. 3. If found guilty, Bankman-Fried could spend life in prison.

Katie Ledecky Takes AP Female Athlete of the Year Honors

Katie Ledecky quietly put together one of the biggest years in all of sports. The US swimmer and seven-time Olympic gold medalist took home the 2022 AP Female Athlete of the Year award. The award marks her second, having won in 2017. Ledecky added two world records this year to her extensive résumé. “I know so many great athletes have won this honor,” Ledecky said. “I’m really happy — happy with how my year went, and also excited about the future.”

Taylor Swift Tops 2022 Vinyl Sales

As the vinyl resurgence continues, Taylor Swift is cashing in. The Midnights singer has sold over 800,000 copies of her newest album on vinyl. With the mark, she becomes the first artist to sell more copies of her music on vinyl than CDs since the 1980s. This year marked a record sales year for the format, which is expected to tally 5.5 million by the turn of the calendar.  

Ole Miss Inks NIL Deal with Wheels Up

When thinking about the ultimate NIL deal, access to a private jet has to be near the top. The Grove, Ole Miss‘s NIL collective, inked a partnership with Wheels Up. The company enables short-term rentals of small charter planes on demand. As part of their partnership, the athletes will do charitable work with Meals Up and Feeding America. In return, they’ll be able to utilize Wheels Up’s services to get their families to their games.

"Avatar: The Way of Water" Eclipses $1B Worldwide

James Cameron faced a monumental task with the release of Avatar: The Way of Water – the film needed to break $2 billion at the box office to simply break even.  Just two weeks into its worldwide release, the long-form production is halfway to the mark. The movie has eclipsed $1 billion in ticket sales across the globe. The achievement comes even as China experiences a Covid-19 surge, resulting in minimal profit from a major market. The film marked this achievement five days earlier than the original film did, back in 2009.
