In the latest episode of The Newprint, Elmiene sits down to talk about his R&B inspirations, creative process, and much more.
Otis Redding. Stevie Wonder. D’Angelo.
These are just a few of the icons who have laid the foundation for soul and R&B music. But it’s these three legends who directly inspired the work of rising British-Sudanese artist Elmiene. Drawing deeply from ’60s and ’70s soul, as well as ’90s R&B, Elmiene brings modernity and fresh perspectives on his latest project, Heat The Streets. His distinctly textured voice and introspective lyrics work to set him apart from his peers as he helps to breathe fresh life into a timeless genre.
That rare blend of classic influence and contemporary grit came to the forefront with his breakout single, “Golden.” Released in 2021, the track caught the attention of none other than the late Virgil Abloh, who featured the unreleased song during a Louis Vuitton fashion show — just two days after his passing. The moment was powerful: viewers flooded the comment sections, desperate to find the hauntingly soulful track they’d just heard.
“Virgil ended up being one of the men that I’m most thankful for in my whole career, but I’ve never met in my life before,” Elmiene told Boardroom in the latest episode of The Newprint, a series that dives into how young creatives are finding success on their own terms. In addition to sharing the full Abloh story, Elmiene dishes on his creative process, signing with Def Jam, and much more.
