Lisa Leslie, A’ja Wilson highlight inaugural offerings from the W on the popular NFT collectibles platform
To help celebrate its historic 25th season, the WNBA is getting into the NFT game.
On Tuesday, the league, the WNBPA, OneTeam Partners, and NBA Top Shot creator Dapper Labs announced that non-fungible token Moments from the WNBA are coming to basketball’s preeminent digital collectibles platform.
On Aug. 27, fans can expect celebrated highlights featuring current stars and Hall of Famers alike, including reigning league MVP A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and two-time WNBA champ and four-time Olympic gold medalist Lisa Leslie. Starting today, Top Shot enthusiasts will be able to sign up for a chance to reserve a piece of this groundbreaking collection of Moments from the W.
“In their monumental 25th season, we couldn’t be more excited to debut the WNBA and the players on Top Shot,” said Caty Tedman, Head of Partnerships at Dapper Labs. “We’re focused on revolutionizing how fans connect to the sports and players they love and share a goal to transform the fan experience. In the spirit of the iconic and trailblazing league they are, this launch is just the beginning of what we have in store for the W and its fans.”
The first 10,000 Top Shot users to register for the Aug. 27 pack drop will have access to an exclusive First Access Moment at zero additional charge. These 10,000 fans are all guaranteed an opportunity to purchase a pack from this historic collection, but anyone can sign up for the Top Shot queue for an ongoing chance to purchase WNBA Moments as the 2021 season rolls on.
Notably, every WNBA Moment will be available on the exact same marketplace that features their NBA counterparts, all powered by Dapper Labs’ Flow blockchain.
“The players and the fans have been looking forward to this announcement with great excitement and anticipation,” said Terri Jackson, Executive Director of the WNBPA. “We are thrilled that Dapper Labs saw the promise and the opportunity to capture the game’s most electrifying moments and infuse the fan experience with authentic moments in the digital collectible space.”
OneTeam, the players union’s licensing and sponsorship partner, made this partnership a reality as part of its broader mission to build out a long-term NFT strategy for its athletes.
“Top Shot presents an exciting opportunity for the WNBA to engage passionate fans on a whole new level and celebrate the league as it continues to make history,” said Christy Hedgpeth, the WNBA’s Chief Operating Officer. “We have been at the forefront of innovation in many respects and partnering with Dapper Labs on Top Shot allows us to highlight the talent and incredible performances of WNBA players in a heightened way through a digital experience.”
