The first half of 2025 delivered big at the box office.

Sinners had audiences buzzing, and F1: The Movie sped into theaters with global momentum. Horror had a resurgence, but now it’s time to look ahead. The real question is: Is the second half of the year stacked with sequels, reboots, and high-stakes originals that could steal the spotlight all over again? Absolutely.

From long-awaited sequels and franchise revivals to buzzy psychological thrillers and high-concept sci-fi, the back half of 2025 is packed with something for every kind of moviegoer. Whether you’re here for Marvel milestones, musical finales, or A24’s latest left turn, this upcoming slate is heavy on nostalgia, star power, and plot twists you won’t see coming.

Here’s a rundown of some films to keep on your radar as the year winds down.

July

I Know What You Did Last Summer (July 18 in theaters)

Sony Pictures is reviving the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise with a new film that serves as a direct sequel to the 1997 original. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are set to return, reprising their iconic roles in a story that brings a new generation into the deadly fallout of a long-buried secret.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25 in theaters)

Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to kick off Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it hits theaters. Starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvel’s first family, the film will serve as a fresh entry point for the iconic team. Directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman, it’s expected to blend retro sci-fi flair with the MCU’s expanding multiverse storyline.

Together (July 30 in theaters)

Dave Franco and Alison Brie reunite for Together, a new A24-backed horror film that blends romance with psychological terror. Set against an unsettling suburban backdrop, the story unravels a seemingly perfect couple whose relationship begins to fracture in disturbing ways via tension, intimacy, and the horrors that can surface behind closed doors.

August

Freakier Friday (Aug. 8 in theaters)

Disney is officially bringing back the body-swap chaos with Freakier Friday, a sequel to the 2003 hit. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are reprising their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman, this time navigating a new generational switch with Anna’s teenage daughter.

Caught Stealing (Aug. 29 in theaters)

Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz are teaming up for Caught Stealing, a gritty crime thriller set in 1990s NYC. The story follows Hank Thompson (played by Butler), a washed-up baseball player who accidentally gets caught up in a deadly chase for a stash of stolen money. Expect underground fights, shady criminals, and a fast-paced descent into chaos. With Kravitz pulling double duty as director and star, this one’s shaping up to be a star-packed crime flick worth seeing.

September

The Long Walk (Sept. 12 in theaters)

Stephen King’s debut novel, The Long Walk (which was published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman), is finally hitting the big screen this September, with Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence behind the camera. Set in a twisted near-future, the story follows 100 teenage boys forced into a deadly competition where stopping means dying—and only one can survive. Expect a slow-burning psychological horror with dystopian tension, emotional stakes, and King’s signature sense of dread.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale (Sept. 12 in theaters)

The Crawleys are back for one last bow in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, which is being billed as the final chapter in the hit period drama. The whole cast is returning for one more elegant sendoff. The film promises closure, legacy, and plenty of upstairs-downstairs drama as it wraps the story that spans over a decade on screen. And if you’re ready for a massive binge before the finale, the full series is streaming now on Peacock.

October

The Smashing Machine (Oct. 3 in theaters)

In a major shift from his usual blockbuster roles, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson takes on a gritty real-life character in The Smashing Machine. Johnson stars in the A24 drama, where he plays real-life MMA legend Mark Kerr. The film dives into Kerr’s rise as a dominant force in the early days of the UFC–and the addiction, pain, and personal struggles that came with it.

Tron Ares (Oct. 10 in theaters)

Disney is rebooting the grid with Tron: Ares, the long-awaited third chapter in its sci-fi cult franchise. Jared Leto stars as Ares, a conscious tech program who crosses into the real world, triggering a high-stakes collision between humans and AI. The film also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Jodie Turner-Smith.

November

Die, My Love (Nov. 7 on Mubi)

In this psychological thriller, Jennifer Lawrence plays Grace, a new mother whose mental state begins to unravel after moving from New York City to rural Montana with her husband, Jackson (Robert Pattinson). The film delves into a marriage falling apart under the pressures of isolation, creative block, and emotional decay. Mubi scooped the U.S. distribution rights to the movie after a standing ovation at Cannes earlier this year.

Be on the lookout; this film is expected to get a short theatrical release before heading to streaming.

Now You See Me: Now You Don’t (Nov. 14 in theaters)

The Four Horsemen will return in Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the long-awaited third chapter in Lionsgate’s heist-meets-magic franchise. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Franco, and Morgan Freeman return, joined by newcomers like Ariana Greenblatt and Rosamund Pike. Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland) is directing this time around, with the story promising even bigger illusions, global stakes, and a new generation of magicians in the mix.

Wicked: For Good (Nov. 21 in theaters)

The witches are back for Round 2. Wicked: For Good will wrap up the two-part musical adaptation of the Broadway classic. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande return as Elphaba and Glinda, with Jon M. Chu back in the director’s chair to close out the origin story behind The Wizard of Oz.

Frankenstein (Date TBA on Netflix)

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is finally coming to Netflix this November. Oscar Isaac stars as Victor Frankenstein, with Jacob Elordi as a haunting, humanized take on the creature. Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Charles Dance round out the cast. The film is poised to deliver a haunting, gothic drama rooted in fatherhood, identity, and the blurred line between creation and creator.

December

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Dec. 12 on Netflix)

Benoit Blanc is back on the case. Wake Up Dead Man marks the third installment in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out universe. This time, the mystery takes a darker and more dangerous turn, with a religious twist and an all-new ensemble cast featuring Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, and Jeremy Renner. Daniel Craig returns as the southern sleuth.

Avatar: Fire and Ash (Dec. 19 in theaters)

James Cameron is back with Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment that continues Jake Sully and Neytiri’s saga on Pandora, introducing two new Na’vi clans–the sky-dwelling Wind Traders and the militant Ash People. This film features rising emotional stakes and even more jaw-dropping visuals than The Way of Water.

The Housemaid (Dec. 25 in theaters)

Sydney Sweeney stars as Millie, a young woman desperate for a fresh start, when she lands a job as a housemaid for a wealthy couple – Amanda Seyfried’s Nina and Brandon Sklenar’s Andrew – in The Housemaid. Directed by Paul Feig and based on Freida McFadden’s bestseller, the film peels back the layers of this elite family as Millie discovers their darkest secrets–secrets that could be more dangerous than her own past.
