Lomiiel is Proof That Music & Sports Make a Powerful Combo

Last Updated: July 24, 2024
The rising Latin music artist is seeing his streaming numbers skyrocket, boosted by the growing popularity of his hit single “HAY LUPITA” in the sports community.

Ever since hoisting the Euro 2024 trophy after recently defeating England, a familiar sound has followed the Spanish men’s soccer team.

No, not the screaming Spaniards who are still celebrating after not tasting international victory for over a decade. Rather, it’s a catchy tune from Latin music artist Lomiiel, one that’s risen in popularity of late thanks to social media and the strong connection between music and sports.

Prior to blowing up after Euro 2024, Lomiiel was already making a name for himself. “HAY LUPITA” took hold in the TikTok and Instagram space, racking up over 18 million streams of the song on Spotify well before Spain and England faced off in the final. In addition to rising up Billboard charts, Lomiiel was earning recognition from publications such as Complex, which called him an “emerging Latin artist on our radar.”

In the Spanish locker room following the championship match, the players could be heard blaring and dancing to the Dominican artist’s hit Dembow song, which has seemingly followed the team ever since. Lomiiel’s reach has extended well beyond the pitch, too, making its way to the diamond, where New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto uses the hit single as his walk-up music.

Due to his growing popularity, the song’s streaming numbers have exploded to over 55 million, with roughly 40 million views of the song’s music video on YouTube. A significant chunk of this came on July 20, when “HAY LUPITA” racked up nearly 2 million Spotify streams on the day alone.

The combination of sports and music is a powerful one.
