DJ Khaled Tees off New Partnership Ahead of the 2023 Ryder Cup

DJ Khaled is solidifying his footprint in the golf world. The multi-hyphenate entertainer is now an ambassador for the Ryder Cup, Roc Nation announced Monday. In his new role, DJ Khaled will work with the golf tournament to bridge the gap between golf, music, and entertainment while ensuring he maintains authenticity and furthers his passion for the sport. The Roc Nation Sports International collaboration will include creative content creation and production, capitalizing on its in-house resources to deliver premier content to its audience. The Ryder Cup is scheduled to run from Sept. 29 until Oct. 1 in Rome, Italy.

President Biden Unveils High Speed Internet Plan

On Monday, President Joe Biden announced that approximately $42.5 billion from the bipartisan infrastructure law will be distributed to expand high-speed internet access across the country. According to the Associated Press, coverage will extend to those in areas where there is either no service or service is too slow. The funding will go to all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories, with 19 states receiving a maximum award of $1 billion each. “High-speed internet isn’t a luxury anymore,” Biden said about the news.”It’s become an absolute necessity.”

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy Golf Venture Unveils Fenway Sports Group as Second Team Ownership Group

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Golf League (TGL) announced the second of its six-team ownership groups. Fenway Sports Group, owned and run by John Henry and Tom Werner, will participate in the primetime golf league, which tees off in January. FSG is ingrained in the sports world, as it’s the parent company of the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool Football Club, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. FSG was also a part of the initial investment group in TMRW Sports in October 2022. Earlier this month, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams became the first owners of a TGL side, a Los Angeles team.

LeBron James and SpringHill Announce Upcoming Film Festival

LeBron James entertainment company SpringHill Company announced Monday plans to co-host a one-day film festival with the goal of empowering athletes and their storytelling. Scheduled for July 13 at NeueHouse Hollywood, the LA Times reports the festival will highlight two projects that feature Black athletes and their experiences. The first is Goliath, a forthcoming docuseries on Showtime chronicling Los Angeles Lakers legend Wilt Chamberlain. The second is Black Ice, a documentary looking at the long history of racism in hockey through the lens of Black athletes. The news comes one week after SpringHill announced its newest partnership with NBA MVP Joel Embiid and his production company Miniature Géant.

Angela Bassett Finally Gets Her Oscar

Angela Bassett will receive an honorary Oscar in November. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed Monday that Bassett will join Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton as recipients of the golden statue at the Governors Awards. The 64-year-old picked up her first Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Tina Turner in 1994’s What’s Love Got to Do With It and her second earlier this year for playing the grieving queen in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. “Across her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting,” said Academy President Janet Yang of the veteran thespian.

Goldman Sachs Announces Layoffs

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has officially begun cutting managing directors worldwide as the firm reduces its staff amid a drop in trade. The company will let go of about 125 managing directors, targeting the investment banking sector. The outlet added that sales profits experienced more than a 40% decline this year to $1.2 trillion, with Goldman Sachs as the number two adviser globally. This isn’t the only news of banking layoffs in the last week. On Friday, JPMorgan Chase & Co. dismissed around 40 investment bankers as a response to the global downturn.
