The shortlists for the 2025 Ballon d’Or were unveiled on Thursday, with Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappé, and Ousmane Dembélé among the nominees for the men’s award. Meanwhile, Aitana Bonmati, Marta, and Alexia Putellas lead the nominees for the Ballon d’Or Féminin. This year’s Ballon d’Or ceremony will be held on Sept. 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Eddie Murphy and Happy Gilmore 2 director Kyle Newacheck will join forces on Playas Ball, a new comedy from Imagine Entertainment. Plot details are still confidential, but Deadline describes it as an “action comedy about the undead.” 

On revealed a new running shoe that’s designed in partnership with brand ambassador Zendaya and her longtime stylist Law Roach. Called the Cloudzone Moon, the sneaker is a reiteration of the original Cloudzone silhouette. Also dropping as part of this project is an apparel line that includes a bodysuit, a track jacket, a bomber jacket, and shorts.

YoungBoy Never Broke Again has officially made history on the Billboard 200, passing E-40 for the most career entries on the chart among rappers. His latest album, MASA, debuted at No. 6 with 49,000 equivalent units earned in the United States between July 25-31 to become the 34th ranked project of his career since first making the list in 2017. E-40 drops to second with 33, Snoop Dogg sits in third with 30, and tied for fourth with 29 are Gucci Mane and Tech N9ne.

OpenAI revealed its latest artificial intelligence innovation on Thursday, the GPT-5. Calling it the “smartest, fastest, and most useful model yet,” the AI resource is particularly helpful across domains like writing, coding, and health care. The company is making GPT-5 available to everyone, including its free users. 

Olympian Jordan Chiles announced Thursday the launch of the SHERO Athlete Collective, a unique mentorship program for young female athletes navigating elite sports and personal brand building. Inspired by Chiles’ own journey through numerous Olympics, NCAA participation, and the shifting NIL space, SHERO promises holistic guidance across mentorship, career development, social media strategy, and sponsorship support.

Following the success of this summer’s Superman movie, James Gunn will once again write and direct the next installment in the Super-Family, Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav confirmed during the company’s earnings call on Thursday. Zaslav also said The Batman II is preparing to begin shooting next spring for a 2027 release.

DICK’S Sporting Goods has officially introduced its new content and production arm: Cookie Jar & A Dream Studios. The company’s material will recognize the determination, triumphs, and unfortunate heartbreak behind every athlete’s journey, with a goal to create content that inspires a generation of fans long after the final whistle blows. Its official debut is Big Dreams: The Little League World Series 2024, a 51-minute documentary celebrating what makes the Little League World Series so magical. The film premieres Aug. 12 on ESPN.

A week after fires displaced millions across Los Angeles and surrounding areas, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced the company would be donating $15 million to organizations providing immediate relief in partnership with Google. On Thursday, the video platform said that $3 million of that sum will go toward a fund that directly supports creative professionals in Los Angeles. For eligible creative professionals who lost their homes and/or were impacted by the devastation, YouTube will work with the Entertainment Community Fund to distribute funds. 

Two Lil Wayne classics from his early days, Da Drought series and Dedication, is finally on a streaming platform. The projects can be played via Apple Music, although it’s unclear whether we’ll see them on any other services like Spotify or YouTube Music.
