Tom Cruise will be awarded with an honorary Oscar at the 2025 Governors Awards, the Academy confirmed Tuesday, his first Oscar after being nominated four times previously. Additionally, Dolly Parton will be recognized with the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award thanks to her “unwavering dedication to charitable efforts.” Others set to receive honorary Oscars this year are Debbie Allen, whose career spans five decades as a choreographer, actor, and producer, and Wynn Thomas, a longtime Spike Lee collaborator and production designer. The Governors Awards ceremony is set for Nov. 16 in Hollywood.

Naomi Osaka is the subject of a new documentary ordered by Tubi. Produced in partnership with Nike, the four-time Grand Slam winner’s production company Hana Kuma, and The SpringHill Company, The Second Set will “deliver an intimate look into the life of Osaka as she navigates balancing her career with first-time motherhood.” The doc is set to debut in August.

Issa Rae’s management and production company, ColorCreative, has inked a strategic partnership with investment firm HarbourView Equity Partners, with plans to expand globally and increase original content output. Terms of the deal were not disclosed; however, the first joint project between the parties is expected to go into production early next year. Founded in 2014, ColorCreative also said it doubled its revenue from 2023 to 2024.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani returned to pitching Monday night for the first time since August 2023 and in the process, helped MLB.TV record its most-watched game in the streaming platform’s history. Viewership exceeded the previous single-game high by 28%, as fans watched Ohtani throw 28 pitches, surrendering one run on two hits for the lone first inning he was on the mound. The Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres in the NL West showdown, 6-3.

Amazon is giving shoppers more days to save, announcing Tuesday that its annual Prime Day shopping marathon is expanding from two to four days, scheduled for July 8-11. The company also revealed the addition of themed “deal drops” from big brands like Samsung, Kiehl’s, and Levi’s that change daily and are available “while supplies last.” 

Streaming has hit another milestone by recording 44.8% of total TV usage in the U.S. last month, per Nielsen, eclipsing the combined total from broadcast (20.1%) and cable (24.1%) for the first time ever. YouTube once again led the pack for the fourth consecutive month at 12.5% of the TV viewing share, with Netflix in second at 7.5%. Free, ad-supported television also continues to see growth, with PlutoTV, Roku, and Tubi combining for 5.7% of TV viewing in May.

Entertainment studio OBB Media has signed on as the official content partner of Fanatics Fest and is producing Fanatics Fest: All Access, an hour-long special that will air on July 7 on ESPN. The special promises viewers exclusive access to the two-day event, highlighting the biggest moments from the festivities seen through the eyes of six iconic athletes and fans. Fanatics Fest kicks off this weekend.

It’ll be the battle of the real HU when Hampton and Howard compete in the first-ever HBCU Women’s Soccer Invitational, scheduled for Aug. 17 in Washington, D.C., at the Washington Spirit and D.C. United’s home turf, Audi Field. D.C. Power FC, which just wrapped its inaugural season in the USL Super League, will contribute to this event by developing a “pathway-to-pro” pipeline to create more playing opportunities in women’s professional soccer. 

Thanks to $11 million in seed funding led by Menlo Ventures, Alta is aiming to transform the way consumers experience personal shopping through the launch of its AI-powered styling assistant. Reminiscent of the iconic scene in Clueless, the new product will offer users a personal stylist to help them consult on what to wear and purchase, based on their budget, lifestyle, weather, and calendar. The platform has already garnered the support of several famous faces, including Michelle Obama’s stylist Meredith Koop, who Alta founder Jenny Wang said helped train its AI.

BSE Global, the parent firm of the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, announced Wednesday it will open a multi-court youth basketball training facility opposite Barclays Center this fall. The 18,600-square-foot venue will feature two full courts, a “shooting lab” half court, auxiliary baskets, multi-purpose court flooring for other events, and more.
