‘Squid Game’ Breaks Netflix Record During Season 2 Opening Weekend
After the wild success that Netflix‘s Squid Game saw when Season 1 dropped, it’s not surprising to see Season 2 breaking records … and quickly. In just the first four days after the second campaign released on the streaming service the day after Christmas, Squid Game racked up 68 million views worldwide, breaking Netflix’s opening weekend record. The previous record was held by Wednesday, with 50.1 million views in November 2022. Furthermore, the show already claims a spot at No. 7 on the all-time top 10 of non-English language Netflix shows list, currently topped by Squid Game Season 1 at 265.2 million views over its first 91 days.

We’re just days away from Award Season beginning in 2025, with the 82nd annual Golden Globes set to take place on Sunday. On Tuesday, the Golden Globes announced a star-studded list of presenters featuring Andrew Garfield, Demi Moore, Anthony Mackie, Salma Hayek Pinault, and many more. Hosted by Nikki Glaser, the first solo woman to ever emcee the event, other presenters at this year’s Golden Globes will include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kate Hudson, Kerry Washington, Miles Teller, Rob McElhenney, Viola Davis, and Zoë Kravitz. Denver to Pay Reported Record $110M NWSL Expansion Fee
After adding two new teams last season and with another on the way in 2026, Denver has reportedly secured the latest NWSL expansion slot to become the league’s 16th franchise. And while the city selection is newsworthy on its own, the hefty expansion fee of roughly $110 million is stealing headlines. For reference, Bay FC and the eventual Boston-based club each paid $53 million to enter the league. The rise in fee pricing is due to the NWSL’s huge growth over the last year, which includes the average team value rising to $104 million, a 54% year-over-year increase.
Spotify Launches Partner Program to Help Hosts, Content Creators
Spotify is attempting to keep up with the likes of YouTube in the video space with the launch of its Partner Program on Thursday. Aimed to increase its video library, the new program will also allow content creators the ability to monetize their work outside of straight advertising dollars. Per the service, over 65% of eligible shows have already signed up for the program, including Smart Money Happy Hour, The Paranormal Podcast, The Makeshift Podcast, Girls Rewatch Podcast, and more. In conjunction, Spotify also launched a Podcast Clips feature — in the same vein as YouTube Shorts — in which creators can upload short-form videos to help promote their shows.
CNBC Charging $99 Per Year for New Streaming Service
At the end of 2024, reports began to circle that CNBC had its eyes set on launching a new streaming service in the new year. On Tuesday, the company revealed in an email sent to customers who have signed up for CNBC’s digital offerings that the new targeted service will cost $99 per year or $14.99 per month. In its new efforts, CNBC hopes not to compete with companies like Netflix or Disney+ but rather expand its business-centric audience. The service, which will be offered in tiers, won’t boast any new shows but will include features such as a global news feed, advanced market data, and more.
Rush Street, On Holding, TKO Group Among Best-Performing Sports Stocks in 2024
Despite a small dip in December to close out the year, sports stocks gained 18% in 2024, the best year-over-year increase for the Sportico Sports Stock Index since 2020. Leading the way as the two best-performing stocks were Rush Street Interactive, which more than tripled its share price this year, and Amer Sports, rising 115% since going public in January. On Holding, backed by Roger Rederer, was the third-best stock in 2024, thanks to a 103% jump, while Daktronics (+99%) and TKO Group (+74%) rounded out the top five.
Lululemon Eyes Growing Golf Space with Max Homa Partnership
In an attempt to keep up with the evolving golf space, lululemon is making moves by signing its second pro ambassador, Max Homa. However, instead of leaning into flash, Homa and the brand want to focus on maintaining classic, timeless “essentials so that you look and feel good on and off the course.” Homa, a six-time PGA Tour winner, joins Min Woo Lee as the only golfers on lululemon’s athlete roster that also includes DK Metcalf, Jordan Clarkson, Connor Bedard, and Leylah Fernandez.
Tesla Records Annual Sales Fall for First Time in Over a Decade
Tesla‘s record fourth-quarter push to end the year wasn’t enough to keep the company from recording a drop in annual sales in 2024, the first time in over a decade. Per the company’s official release, Tesla sold 1.79 million vehicles last year, slightly less than in 2023. Following the news, the company’s stock fell roughly 6% by market close on Thursday (Tesla’s stock gained 63% throughout 2024). In the latest earnings call, owner Elon Musk told investors he expects the company to grow 20-30% in 2025, though many analysts have already expressed doubt surrounding that claim.
