Kylian Mbappé: Inside the PSG Superstar’s Move to Real Madrid

Last Updated: May 21, 2022

UPDATE 5/21: Insider Fabrizio Romano reports that Kylian Mbappé has spurned a Real Madrid move and has committed to remain at Paris Saint-Germain.

The Mbappé transfer rumor mill has caught fire with the French superstar reportedly set to move from PSG to Real Madrid for free this summer. Let’s talk contract details!

When the 2021-22 season began across global soccer, we were stunned to witness arguably the single best player in the sport (and possibly all-time), Lionel Messi, change teams on a free transfer.

Customarily, a club pays an agreed-upon transfer fee in exchange for the services of a player who’s currently under contract. In the case of Messi, FC Barcelona’s crippling debt issues prevented them from locking in an extension before he became a free agent and left town for Paris Saint-Germain.

Now, if the reporting holds true, PSG would be set to see what it’s like to be on the other side of the free transfer tango. As German outlet BILD reports, superstar forward Kylian Mbappé will leave the club at the end of the season to join Real Madrid, where he’ll make an annual salary above $55 million. Due to Mbappé being out of contract at season’s end, the presumptive French champions — who paid $159.5 million to AS Monaco for his services in summer 2018 — would receive zero compensation in return.

Kylian Mbappé Salary & Contract Details

Age: 23
Club: Paris Saint-Germain
National team: France
Current contract: Expires June 2022
Estimated market value: $176,000,000 (via Transfermarkt)

Mbappé’s Reported Real Madrid Contract Details

Contract length: 4 years
Total value: €200,000,000 (approx. $230,000,000)
Average annual value: €50,000,000 ($56,000,000)

If the deal with Spain’s Galacticos proceeds as reported by BILD, Mbappé would become the highest-paid footballer in the world. It’s only fair for the young gun, of course, who became a World Cup champion as a teenager and now owns Transfermarkt’s highest estimated market value in soccer at age 23.

Just for kicks, here’s how much of the three-time Ligue 1 champion’s annual €50 million he will earn per various units of time:

  • €958,904.10 per week (approx. $1,076,715.06)
  • €136,986.30 per day ($153,816.44)
  • €5,707.76 per hour ($6,409.02)
  • €95.13 per minute ($106.82)
  • €1.59 per second ($1.79)

Not bad for someone who’s still nearly two full years away from hitting the quarter-century mark on planet earth.
