Jonah Hill Set to Star in John Daly Biopic

In perhaps the greatest casting of all time, Jonah Hill will star in an upcoming biopic about PGA Tour legend John Daly. The hard-hitting golfer disrupted the high-brow game with his wild fashion and omnipresent cigarettes, earning the nickname “the bad boy of golf.” Hill, who previously starred in Moneyballwill tackle the role with his signature style. The film is set to be directed by Anthony Maras. There is no timeline for its release at this time.

BIG3 Becomes First-ever Black Owned Sports League

In a groundbreaking moment for pro sports, ByBlack and the US Black Chambers have officially acknowledged the BIG3 as a Black-owned and operated company. Rapper, actor, and entrepreneur Ice Cube originally launched the innovative basketball league back in 2017 alongside entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz. The league wrapped its fifth season earlier this year and recently began selling ownership-like franchise stakes powered by blockchain technology. Notable people who have bought teams include Snoop Dogg and Ken Howery, Gary Vaynerchuk, and DeGods.

Lil Wayne Earns 8X Multi-Platinum Honors from RIAA

That’s how you let the beat build. RIAA declared that Lil Wayne‘s Tha Carter III has obtained the illusive honor of going 8-times multi-platinum. The album, which came out in June 2008, continues to sustain its popularity despite the passage of time. In addition, Tunechi received 22 total plaque upgrades, including 3 albums and 19 singles.

GOAT Eyes Streetwear Marketshare with Grailed Takeover

GOAT hit the headlines recently due to its strategic placement punctuating a Messi goal for PSG. Now the sneaker marketplace seeks to expand its global footprint. The company is expected to take over streetwear re-seller Grailed. This is not the first instance of collaboration between the two companies, as GOAT participated in Grailed’s $60 million 2021 fundraise. The move corresponds with GOAT’s international expansion efforts.

Skydance Targets Sports Expansion with $400M Strategic Investment

Skydance has its sights set on the sports media market. The company announced that it successfully completed a $400 million strategic investment round led by KKR. Participating investors include RedBird Capital Partners and Tencent. In a release, the company reported that it intends to use the funds “to help accelerate Skydance’s growth initiatives in sports and interactive entertainment, as well as the continued scaling of existing verticals such as animation.” The fundraising round corresponded with a $4 billion valuation for the company.

NBA Announces Grambling, Southern to Lead HBCU Classic

The 2022-23 NBA season’s All-Star Weekend is heading to Salt Lake City. Amidst a weekend of events, the league announced that Grambling State University and Southern University will tip off in the HBCU Classic at the University of Utah’s Jon. M. Huntsman Center in February. The league hosted the first-ever HBCU Classic during NBA All-Star 2022 in Cleveland, where Howard University and Morgan State University played. Both schools received $100,000 to support the “student experience.”
