NFL Salary Cap Jumps to $224.8M

As NFL fans gear up for an Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl matchup, the league announced something more relevant for those who were just eliminated. The salary cap number has increased from $208.2 million to $224.8 million for 2023, setting a new record. The figure increased every single year since it was first established in 2013, with the exception of 2021 when the NFL saw a hit in revenue amid the pandemic. All said, it’s another testament to the stellar product the league put out this season.

Shohei Ohtani Signs with New Balance

Shohei Ohtani is redefining the game of baseball. The Angels’ two-way sensation announced on Tuesday that he has signed with New Balance as the sportswear brand’s newest ambassador. To jumpstart their partnership, Ohtani will wear the first-ever cleat version of the iconic New Balance 574. Ohtani joins the New Balance baseball family alongside New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor. The Massachusetts-based company has assembled a heavy-hitting list of high-profile athletes including Kawhi Leonard, Coco Gauff, Raheem Sterling, and more.

Fisk University Gymnastics First Gets Documentary Treatment

Earlier this year, Fisk University made history by becoming the first HBCU gymnastics team to compete at an NCAA event. Now, they’ll be on the big screen for it. Filmmaker Deborah Riley Draper and wiip will make a docuseries on the pressures of their first season while challenging the stereotypes and norms in women’s athletics. “This is the most aspirational coming-of-age sports story of the year. We have not seen this before and it’s happening in real-time. My work as a filmmaker has always and will always be about unpacking and centering stories of extraordinary Black women as they navigate the intersection of race, gender, and class. Watching this unfold in gymnastics will be a blueprint and a lesson for equity and access,” said Draper.

Ticket Prices Skyrocket in the Run-up to SB LVII

Massachusetts Officially Launches Sports Betting

The time has finally come when Sox fans can place their bets without having to drive to the New Hampshire line. Sports betting goes live in Massachusetts on Tuesday at 10 AM. The rollout will have a huge financial impact on the Bay State. WBUR estimates that it will bring in an estimated $60 million in tax revenue and an additional $70 million in start-up fees. 

Paramount+ and Showtime Merge in "Uncertain" Restructure

Paramount is preparing for its Q4 earnings call on Feb. 16 by doing a little bit of reorganizing. The company announced on Monday that it will merge Paramount+ and Showtime under a common cover, rebranding as “Paramount+ with Showtime.” The news came via internal memo, which expressed that the company remained “uncertain” what the future could hold for the employees. Three Showtime series were canceled, including American Gigolo, Let the Right One In, and Three Women, as the company prepares for its next steps.
