Memphis Grizzlies & More Respond to the Murder of Tyre Nichols

The release of body cam footage from the murder of Tyre Nichols has sparked a national response from the community, including the Memphis Grizzlies, NBA, NBPA, WNBA, and WNBPA, demanding justice and expressing support for the Nichols family. The five officers involved have been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression.

NWSL Resets Ownership Market with $50M Franchise Fee

The NWSL is eyeing expansion. However, it’ll cost a pretty penny to break into the rising league. The Wall Street Journal revealed on Friday that the NWSL is set to expand to the Bay Area, Boston, and Utah, bringing the total teams to 15. The teams in the Bay and the Bean each netted franchise fees of $50 million, whereas Utah’s agreement was arranged years ago and got them the grandfathered rate between $2 and $5 million. The difference in these highlights the growth of the league in a short time. 

‘The Last of Us’ Greenlit for Second Season

Just two episodes in and The Last of Us has already made a mark. The HBO show premiered to impressive numbers, and continues to be on the rise, as the first episode surpassed the 22 million view mark. Despite its small sample size, HBO is all in and greenlit the series for a second season. The third episode debuts this Sunday, and those in the know say it’s the best so far. 

‘KOKOMO CITY’ Shines Among Sundance Awards

The stars are out in Park City, and it’s time to bestow the awards of this season’s best films. The Sundance Awards were passed  out on Friday. KOKOMO CITY, D. Smith’s acclaimed documentary which highlights the black trans experience, took home both the NEXT Innovator and Audience Awards. In addition, Grand Jury Prizes were  awarded to A Thousand and One, Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, Scrapper, and The Eternal Memory.

Miley Cyrus Gets Her ‘Flowers’

Miley Cyrus turned pain into success. The singer’s most recent single “Flowers” seems to pull inspiration from her divorce, but Cyrus has always been known to make the best out of a bad situation. In its first two weeks, “Flowers” set and broke its own single-week record on Spotify. This week it eclipsed 115 million streams, while also securing the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts.
