Netflix confirmed Wednesday that its latest sports docuseries, Starting 5, will premiere on Oct. 9. This 10-part program offers a behind-the-scenes look at the 2023-24 NBA season on and off the hardwood.  Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis, and Jayson Tatum headline the show. James plays double duty in the production, as his Uninterrupted brand serves as a producer in collaboration with Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions and Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions.

Following a memorable monologue during The Roast of Tom Brady earlier this year, comedian Nikki Glaser has been tapped to host the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards. The role marks Glaser’s first time as emcee for the ceremony, which celebrates achievements in film and television. In a statement, Glaser credited Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Ricky Gervais as inspirations and called the assignment a “dream job.” The iconic awards show will air on Jan. 5, 2025 on CBS and stream on Paramount+.

Shedeur Sanders is officially team Nike. On the eve of Colorado’s 2024 season opener, the Swoosh announced a deal with the team’s star QB that includes officially licensed apparel and footwear. Fresh off the announcement, Sanders will be featured in content leading up to the retro return of his father’s DT Max 96 silhouette. The deal expands the young QBs bustling brand portfolio, which includes Beats by Dre, Urban Outfitters, Google, and more. According to On3.com, Sanders boasts the highest NIL valuation among all college athletes at $4.7 million. 

Your Instagram followers could soon get a peek into your listening habits. According to TechCrunch, “reverse engineer” Alessandro Paluzzi noticed the feature on the popular social media app. Paluzzi, who frequently uncovers new functions before they are officially announced, discovered a new feature that would allow users to continuously share what they’re listening to on Spotify, building on the song clip function added to Notes in 2022. At this time, there is no word from Meta if this will become a permanent feature.

A jersey LeBron James wore on the renowned Sports Illustrated cover that dubbed him “The Chosen One” is up for auction. According to the The Athletic, the jersey will go up for sale during a Julien’s Auctions event in Hong Kong next month. James wore the uniform during a game the same day he shot the cover as a junior at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, OH. Early estimates indicate that the prized possession could fetch $1-$2 million, which would make history as the most paid for a game-worn high school jersey.

Marshawn Lynch is one of a kind, producing content gold in whatever show he’s appearing in by simply being himself. On Thursday, the Super Bowl champion announced he’s teaming up with Playmaker HQ to launch a new weekly video show, Da Get Got Pod, in which he will give his “thoughts on current events in sports and pop culture.” The podcast will be co-hosted by NFL Network’s – and Lynch’s former Seahawks teammate – Mike Robinson and is expected to feature some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment as guests. “I’m hella ready to get Da Get Got Pod rockin’,” Lynch said in the official press release.

An authorized biopic of Steve Harvey is in the works from Objectively Good Media. Titled Seventy-Two, Deadline reports the story chronicles a life-changing 72-hour period ahead of Harvey’s performance at New York’s iconic Apollo Theater in 1993. Harvey confirmed the news, saying, “It focuses on one of the most difficult moments in my journey and career, and shows the world that hope is never truly lost. Wait until you see what we do with this.” The film is in the earliest stages of development and does not have an anticipated release date at this time.

ESPN confirmed Wednesday a 12-year agreement with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) that will keep the US Open the year on ESPN through 2037. The deal goes into effect in 2026 and highlights include expanded streaming rights, extensive Fan Week coverage ahead of the tournament, availability of all play across all courts daily, and more. This contract checks in as ESPN’s longest-term tennis agreement.
