Lady Gaga Headlines MTV VMA Nominations; Bruno Mars & Kendrick Lamar Close Behind
MTV revealed the list of nominees for the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday, and leading the pack is Lady Gaga with 12 nods, including for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Best Album. Bruno Mars sits in second with 11, while Kendrick Lamar is in third with 10. ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter both have eight apiece to round out the top five. The MTV VMAs will air live on CBS and MTV on Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. ET from New York, and will also stream on Paramount+.
Daniel Kaluuya to Lead ‘Spider-Punk’ Spin-Off
Deadline reports Daniel Kaluuya is expected to reprise his Spider-Punk role from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for an animated spin-off. Sony Pictures Animation is in “early” development on the Spider-Punk flick, with Kaluuya and Ajon Singh set to co-write the screenplay. The final installment in the Spider-Verse trilogy — Beyond the Spider-Verse — is slated for release on June 25, 2027.
Harlem Globetrotters, Jeff Hamilton Collab for 100th Anniversary Uniforms
The Harlem Globetrotters have collaborated with Jeff Hamilton, they announced Tuesday, calling on the designer to create the organization’s Centennial look, including a redesign of its uniform for the milestone season. Hamilton’s work has been featured all over the basketball space, most recently designing the commemorative jackets when the NBA announced its 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. In addition to the Centennial uniform, Hamilton will be working on a series of limited-edition releases that will roll out throughout the centennial calendar beginning this fall.
Roku Debuts Low-Cost, Ad-Free Streaming Service
Roku has unveiled its commercial-free streaming service, Howdy, and it only costs users $2.99 a month. Available across the country beginning Tuesday, the platform will feature a library of nearly 10,000 hours of material from its partners, including Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, and FilmRise, alongside select Roku Original content.
New York Film Festival Unveils Star-Studded Main Slate
The 63rd New York Film Festival unveiled its main slate on Tuesday, and it boasts 34 of the most acclaimed and anticipated films of the year from 26 countries. The lineup, running from Sept. 26 to Oct. 13, includes Cannes Palme d’Or winner It Was Just an Accident, along with Oscar nominees and winners Luca Guadagnino, Kathryn Bigelow, Noah Baumbach, and Bradley Cooper, who will close the festivities with the world premiere of Is This Thing On? NYFF63 single tickets are available for purchase beginning Sept. 18 at noon ET.
Offset Taps Gunna, Key Glock, John Legend for Upcoming Album ‘KIARI’
Offset is gearing up to drop his third solo project, announcing via Instagram that KIARI is coming on Aug. 22. Described as his “most personal body of work yet,” the album — technically self-titled after his real name, Kiari Kendrell Cephus — features guest appearances from YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Gunna, YFN Lucci, Ty Dolla $ign, John Legend, and Key Glock.
Fox One to Launch Just in Time for NFL Season
Fox One, the direct-to-consumer streaming service by Fox, Fox Sports, and Fox News, is officially launching on Aug. 21, just ahead of kickoff for the 2025 NFL season. Promising live sports and news programming that appears on its broadcast and cable TV channels, a subscription costs $19.99 per month. However, don’t expect any original or exclusive content just yet. Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said that eventually, the company will offer bundle packages that mirror traditional cable packages.
Charli XCX Teams Up with Converse for Limited-Edition Chucks
Charli XCX has teamed up with Converse to offer limited-edition shoes on the company’s “For You” page, featuring a range of colors, graphics, patches, and charms for fans to create customized Chucks. One can even add phrases such as “Party Girl” and “Brat” on the bottom of the shoes, selling for $100 each. But you’d better be quick: Converse is only offering the promotion through Thursday.
Former X CEO Lands Next Leadership Gig
Linda Yaccarino, the former CEO of X, has a new leadership gig in the weight loss space: eMed Population Health, an AI startup developing a tech platform for patients using GLP-1s, confirmed Tuesday her appointment as CEO. In the release, eMed said they recruited the marketing vet because of her “undeniable ability to negotiate new partnerships.” X’s first permanent CEO since Elon Musk acquired it in 2022, Yaccarino left the social media site in July after two years on the job.
Alex Ovechkin Goes Hollywood, Partners with Yandex to Produce Career Content
Washington Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin and Yandex have agreed to a deal in which the Russian technology company will produce a movie, series, or documentary about his storied NHL career via its production arm, Plus Studio. A 12-time All-Star, Ovechkin has played all 20 years of his NHL hockey career with the Capitals, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2018 when he led the team to its first Stanley Cup championship.
