David Beckham Goes Global with Alibaba

David Beckham has added yet another line to his resume. The Inter Miami exec revealed that he’s signed an ambassador for Alibaba’s commerce platform, AliExpress. The news comes as the world prepares for a massive summer in global soccer, including the Olympics and the upcoming kick off of the UEFA Euros. Additionally, the partnership reflects Alibaba’s efforts to stay in-step with Chinese competitors including Temu and Shein.

OpenAI Steps up Security Monitoring with New Committee

Sam Altman and OpenAI are doubling down on security. Just weeks after disbanding its oversight board, Altman announced the Safety & Security Committee via blogpost. The announcement also unveiled that OpenAI was working on its newest model. The committee is made up of OpenAI executives, including Altman himself. As part of a blog post announcing the new committee, the company also revealed it will have full recommendations in 90 days.

‘Furiosa’ Leads an All-around Weak Weekend at the Box Office

Memorial Day usually serves as the unofficial launch of the summer blockbuster season. All the signs pointed to 2024 having the formula for success with the most recent Mad Max installment, Furiosa, hitting theaters. Alas, the weekend proved to be a bust, posting the worst holiday weekend numbers in three decades. The film took in $31 million in ticket sales over the long weekend, just barely staving off Garfield.

Taylor Swift Holds off Billie Eilish for Top Spot on the Billboard 200

Taylor Swift’s reign at the top of the Billboard 200 continues. For the fifth consecutive week, The Tortured Poets Department held on to the No. 1 position, moving the equivalent of 378,000 units. Billie Eilish slid into the second spot, moving the equivalent of 339,000 units during the debut week of her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. The combined success marks the first time since 2016 that two separate albums moved more than 300,000 units, when Drake’s Views and Beyoncé’s Lemonade combined for the feat.

GameStop Stock Sell-off Sparks Pre-market Boost

Once again, GameStop shares are on the up and up. The popular meme stock experienced a boost two weeks ago when X user “Roaring Kitty” posted for the first time in three years. Now, the company announced on Friday that it totaled $993 million in the stock sale. Following the news, the stock surged 25% in pre-market trading prior to the markets opening on Tuesday morning.
