Dreamville, J. Cole Enlist DJ Drama for ‘D-Day’ Mixtape

Last Updated: April 19, 2022
A surprise project from J. Cole’s Dreamville label titled D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape receives a rare facelift with the help of DJ Drama — just in time for the Dreamville Music Festival.

As it often does, it began with a tweet.

Rapper and head of Dreamville imprint label J. Cole surprised everyone just three days before the 2022 Dreamville Music Festival — taking place this weekend in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Next, Cole dropped the dystopian, war-torn artwork — signifying that his team is battle-ready.

D-Day was coming from Cole and Co., along with a special guest.

The mixtape, which received the Gangsta Grillz treatement from the legendary DJ Drama, comes in at 50 minutes and 15 tracks long. In other words, there won’t be a shortage of music for the fans attending Dreamville Fest.

The entire Dreamville cast of J. Cole, Ari Lennox, J.I.D, Bas, EARTHGANG, Lute, Cozz, and Omen is featured. The guest spots are just as impressive, including heavy-hitters such as A$AP Ferg, 2 Chainz, Sheck Wes, G Perico, Young Nudy, Kenny Mason, and REASON.

There’s even a song, “Starting 5,” with an interlude referencing the instantly infamous Will Smith and Chris Rock incident from last weekend’s 2022 Oscars. DJ Drama wasted no time dropping a line about “The Slap,” which Dreamville head and J. Cole’s manager Ibrahim “Ib” Hamad explained:

The mixtape maestro DJ Drama will have his first-ever Gangsta Grillz performance on stage during Dreamville Fest, with special guests Lil Wayne, Jeezy and T.I. — who have all had their own fair shares of Gangsta Grillz classics. See the full festival lineup below, and listen to D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape here.
