Patrick Mahomes Locks Second MVP Award

The Kansas City Chiefs are ready for the blistering defense of the Philadelphia Eagles in this Sunday’s Super Bowl match-up. And despite a high ankle sprain, Patrick Mahomes reports that he’s feeling better than ever as he sets his sights on his second Lombardi Trophy. However, if he does, it’s not the only prize he’ll be taking home. The 27-year-old received the MVP at last night’s NFL Honors. It was a big night for QBs as Dak Prescott also got the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. Justin Jefferson and Nick Bosa received the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year Awards, respectively.

Carmelo Anthony Set to Launch $750 Private Equity Fund

Future Basketball Hall-of-Famer Carmelo Anthony is launching a $750 million sports-focused private equity fund called Stay Me7o, according to Sportico. Isos Capital, who declined comment at this time, will reportedly team up with the 10-time All Star on the venture, which will be “primarily focused on global blue-chip team and league investments that can leverage Isos’ operational expertise to drive commercial value.”

SZA Tapped as Billboard’s 2023 Woman of the Year

The top woman of Top Dawg is collecting her flowers. Only six weeks into 2023, SZA has stayed on top of the charts following the December release of her sophomore album, SOS. Now, she’s running up the first of many awards as Billboard announced that she is their 2023 Woman of the Year. The Billboard Women in Music Awards will take place on Mar. 1 in Los Angeles.

Kobe Bryant MVP Jersey Fetches $5.8M

A signed Kobe Bryant jersey from his MVP season in 2007-08 sold for $5,849,700 at Sotheby’s. It is the second-most expensive basketball jersey ever sold after Michael Jordan’s 1998 Finals jersey sold for $10.1 million.  “This jersey is iconic in a way we seldom see in sports artifacts,” said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectibles in a statement. “The image of Kobe wearing this particular jersey during the NBA Playoffs has permeated in popular culture, reprinted on murals, books, newspapers [and] has become a symbol of his fierce determination and passion that has resonated with audiences across the world.”

‘Squid Game’ Jumps into Virtual Reality

Squid Game is the type of show that you certainly don’t want try at home, but VR will give you the option to do so… safely. In a partnership with Sandbox VR, Netflix will produce a game based on the Korean TV series. Players will have the ability to enter the chilling world of Squid Games at any of Sandbox’s 30 arcades, and according to the VR company, the experience will have players “transported to iconic Squid Game locations” where they become contestants in different challenges inspired by the show.

Mets Continue Off-season Spend with Super Bowl Commercial

Mets owner Steve Cohen is no stranger to spending, but this might be his most unique investment in the franchise since he bought the team in 2020. The Point72 Asset Management hedge fund founder spent $1.5 million for a 30-second commercial during Super Bowl LVII. The commercial features team stars, namely Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and Koudai Senga. In late January, the team teased the ad on social media and tweeted, “Something amazin’ awaits!”
