Georges St-Pierre Shoots Down Comeback Rumors As Trading-Card Prices Climb

With rumors of a Georges St-Pierre vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov super-fight promptly put to rest after Nurmagomedov’s surprise retirement, UFC fans have been eager to attach a new name to a potential GSP comeback matchup. One such name is that of welterweight champion Kamaru Usman who recently added another win to his 18-1 record. However, that matchup appears to be a no-go as well, with St-Pierre stating on The Good Show that “to go back and give three months of my life in a training camp to get a win over Kamaru Usman doesn’t get me motivated.” GSP then put a final nail in the comeback-coffin by concluding, “I don’t think there’s anything that would get me motivated to go back to competition now.”

Meanwhile, Georges St-Pierre trading cards have continued to rise in price, with seven sales crossing the $1,000 mark over the past week – including an ungraded autograph that sold for nearly $8,000. The two cards often considered to be Georges’ rookies – the Topps UFC Round 1 & 2 – have been plagued by a supply-side crisis, with very few cards hitting the open market, even in their ‘raw’ (ungraded) form. Between the two cards, only 20 sales have taken place on eBay over the past 3 months. And while there are 20 currently available for purchase, most appear to be either in ungradable condition or substantially overpriced compared to recent sales – which have seen the two cards appreciate in price by 150-350 percent.

The question now is whether St-Pierre’s assertion that he lacks the motivation to consider a return to the octagon will negatively affect his card prices. However, it’s hard to imagine such a downturn would last long with his standing as both one of the greatest UFC fighters ever as well as one of the most revered Canadian athletes of all time long-since cemented. So whether we see the legendary GSP ever step into the ring again or not, it seems like a good bet that his cards will remain one of the most sought-after assets in the industry.
