Brittney Griner Detained by Russia Officials, Details Slowly Emerge

Two weeks ago, the WNBA confirmed that several players who were in Russia playing in international competition were making plans to come home amidst the war with Ukraine. While the league did not release names at that time to protect the players’ safety, details have emerged that Phoenix Mercury superstar Brittney Griner was detained by officials for possession of drug-related items. According to sources, Griner was detained three weeks ago. Boardroom will continue to track this story as details unfold. 

The Batman Rakes in $120M in Opening Weekend

Batman made another lifesaving mission this weekend, this time for the IRL movie industry. The Batman, featuring Robert Pattinson and Zoë Kravitz has taken in $120 million, including a $57 million spike on Friday alone. The news comes the same week as AMC released a strong-than-expected earnings report, signaling the return of the movie theater. 

Charlotte FC Brings in over 74K Fans, Sets MLS Attendance Record

The MLS is back. In its second weekend, the professional soccer league is already setting a new standard. Last night in Charlotte, 74,429 fans showed up and showed out to support Charlotte FC as the club took on the LA Galaxy. Although the team lost 1-0, it set a new standard for fan love in the league.

Ninety-six Alums Show Up to Celebrate Coach K

Next season, Cameron Indoor Stadium will have a new face on the sidelines for the first time since 1980. On Saturday, 96 Blue Devil alums, including JJ Redick, Grant Hill, and Shane Battier, showed up to support their beloved coach, as Coach K closed out his regular season with a 94-81 loss against rival UNC. But even the Tar Heels’ gritty play couldn’t dampen the day for Duke, which celebrated Coach K’s legacy. Duke heads into the conference tournament ranked No. 4.

The fight was primed to be an explosive event after tensions ran high between Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal at the pre-fight weigh-in. Covington took home the W, despite saying that he did not feel like he fought his best in a post-match press conference.

Cindy Parlow Cone Retains Presidential Position at U.S. Soccer

It’s been an exciting few weeks for U.S. Soccer. The Federation resolved its equal pay lawsuit and picked up a major streaming deal with Turner Sports. Now U.S. Soccer voted to keep Cindy Parlow Cone on as President for another four-year term, thus avoiding a difficult transition for the Federation. The win resulted in the narrowest vote in the history of U.S. Soccer, with Parlow Cone securing just under 53% and defeating past president Carlos Cordeiro.
