When the 2021-22 season began across global soccer, we were stunned to witness arguably the single best player in the sport (and possibly all-time), Lionel Messi, change teams on a free transfer.
Customarily, a club pays an agreed-upon transfer fee in exchange for the services of a player who’s currently under contract. In the case of Messi, FC Barcelona’s crippling debt issues prevented them from locking in an extension before he became a free agent and left town for Paris Saint-Germain.
Now, if the reporting holds true, PSG would be set to see what it’s like to be on the other side of the free transfer tango. As German outlet BILD reports, superstar forward Kylian Mbappé will leave the club at the end of the season to join Real Madrid, where he’ll make an annual salary above $55 million. Due to Mbappé being out of contract at season’s end, the presumptive French champions — who paid $159.5 million to AS Monaco for his services in summer 2018 — would receive zero compensation in return.
