Chris Paul Backs New TBT-inspired Soccer Tournament

The Basketball Tournament is expanding beyond just hoops. TBE Enterprises announced on Tuesday that they’re creating a $1 million winner-take-all 7 vs. 7 competition soccer event in 2023. TST has already has its first two teams: Team Dempsey, founded by US National Soccer Hall of Famer and former US Men’s National Team star Clint Dempsey, and Hashtag United, the popular British football and esports club. “Our model has always been about open access for all, something European soccer embraces through promotion/relegation and events like the FA Cup,” said founder and CEO Jon Mugar. Chris Paul, who co-owns TBE Enterprises, expressed his excitement for the upcoming tournament, saying, “The model breeds intense competition and is built for success beyond just basketball.”

Giants-Packers Brings in 5.5M Viewers, Sets New International Series Record

There have been 31 games played in London since the league introduced the game across the pond in 2007 — and none have featured two teams with winning records. That was, of course, until this past Sunday when the Giants (4-1) defeated the Packers (3-2) in Week 5. Perhaps that’s why viewership for the game garnered 5.5 million viewers. It became the NFL Network’s most-watched International Series game on record since its launch in 2016. The 5.5 million viewers represent a 55% year-over-year increase as compared to the Week 5 London matchup between the Jets and Falcons. Next, the NFL will head over to Munich, Germany on Nov. 13, where the Seahawks will take on the Bucs.

Merritt Paulson, CEO and owner of the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns, announced that he’s stepping down as CEO for both teams amid reports alleging sexual misconduct and improper handling of reports of abusive behavior within the Thorns organization. “Part of me holding myself accountable is recognizing that someone else needs to take the reins of the organization and operational decision-making,” said Paulson in a statement. In the meantime, general counsel Heather Davis will take over as interim CEO. Sarah Keane — Davis’ chief officer appointee — will lead the search for a new CEO.
